What is Power, Really?

In Season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy was faced with her biggest challenge.  She had to figure out how to defeat Glory and save her sister Dawn from unlocking a portal to hell. There was a great scene where she tells the Scooby Gang the following:

“I’ve had a lot of people talking at me the last few days. Everyone just lining up to tell me how unimportant I am. And I’ve finally figured out why. Power. I have it. They don’t. This bothers them.”

We all have demons in our lives, and some of us have demons like Glory who are demon gods. Demon gods are a little harder to defeat. They suck the life out of you. They make you feel less of a person. They put you down, stab you in the back, and bully you until your entire life because miserable.  I was hoping I would never have to experience this type of torture in my life, but I have.  I have learned that the best technique when dealing with this kind of person is to remember you have the power.

Power is not about having the one up on someone else. Power is not about bossing others around just because you can. Power is not about gossiping and putting others down in front of colleagues.  Why do you think there are heroes and villains? The villains always think power means having a one up on the heroes.

Having power means you own up to your mistakes. Powerful people never blame others for their problems. Having power means you take the time to help others become successful. Powerful people admit when they are wrong, and they find a solution.  Powerful people have successful followers who want to lead as well.

Buffy finally realizes that she holds the power in this situation. She learned from her previous mistakes, and found a solution. She has a team willing to fight with her to the end. Once Glory learned Buffy held the power, she became obsessed with taking her down.

Don’t let the demon god in your life steal your power. Remember you have the ability to take control of any situation.
