Pirate week is here! I’ve been counting down the days for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” since last year. I will be sharing my love for the films over the next week, and I would love for everyone to share as well.
I’ve enjoyed Johnny Depp’s films before “Pirates,” but when he became the Captain I wanted to learn more. I was in my second year of undergraduate studies when the first film came out. I remember thinking it would probably be a flop. I dragged my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, to see it on opening day. When the film was over the entire theater broke out into applause. It was a film that made movies great again.
I immediately decided I wanted to minor in film studies. I took every film class offered at my university so I could learn more about the culture of film. Every research paper I wrote was on Johnny Depp. I wrote about his role in “Pirates” and in various Tim Burton films. I researched his acting, and what inspired him to play certain roles. He became so breathtaking to watch on film.
What I love about Depp is he didn’t care before “Pirates” and he won’t care after “Pirates,” as to what others think about his roles. He doesn’t care if it flops at the box office. He knows his fans are the ones who keep him going. He will always have odd ball roles because that’s what makes him tick. I am looking forward to this next installment of the “Pirates” franchise, and I hope it continues to inspire the Disney community.
